The Cambridge Fintech Ecosystem Atlas is a scientific digital tool developed to identify, map, track, and analyse fintech entities and their activities across different markets and jurisdictions over time. It is maintained by the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance and serves as a research-driven resource to better understand the structure and evolution of the global fintech industry.
Rather than offering static data points, the Atlas visualises the development of fintech from 2010 to 2021 through three interactive modes: graph, map, and table. These visualisation tools allow users to explore connections between entities, geographic expansion, and market dynamics across more than a decade.
The Atlas supports detailed filtering using key variables, including:
-
Operating status: active or inactive
-
Market segments: such as digital lending, payments, wealthtech, insurtech, and more
-
Jurisdictions: by country and region
-
Ownership type: private or public entities
-
Strategic focus: including cryptoasset-related and inclusive fintech initiatives
All filters can be applied across all visualisation formats, enabling complex, multi-dimensional analyses of the fintech ecosystem. For example, one can track how cryptoasset-focused companies have evolved globally, or analyse regional differences in fintech activity over time.
The tool is especially valuable for researchers, regulators, and industry analysts who require a structured and longitudinal view of fintech. By combining academic rigour with real-world data, the Cambridge Fintech Ecosystem Atlas facilitates empirical research, policy analysis, and market intelligence grounded in a global context.
